Richard Russell "Rick" Riordan, Jr. dilahirkan pada 5 Juni 1964 di San Antonio, Texas. Kini ia tinggal di San Antonio bersama istri dan dua orang putra.

Rick Riordan lulus dari Universitas Texas di Austin pada 1986, daerah dia mendalami Bahasa Inggris dan Sejarah. Selama lima belas tahun, dia mengajar di sekolah-sekolah di California dan San Antonio. Dia dianugerahi Penghargaan Guru Besar tingkat pertama dari St. Mary's Hall pada 2002.

Telah banyak pencapaian diraihnya. Seri misteri sampaumur Tres Navarre menjadi nomor satu dalam Daftar Buku Terlaris New York Times pada 28 September, 2008; Hak cipta film atas seri novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians dibeli oleh Twentieth Century Fox dan film pertamanya dirilis pada 12 Februari 2010.
